Garden Route Scenic Drive (N2)

The N2 highway is the famous route that runs through Plettenberg Bay as part of the renowned Garden Route, stretching from Mossel Bay to Storms River. Driving along this route offers sweeping views of the ocean, rolling hills, and dense forests. Head west towards Knysna, a charming town known for its lagoon and waterfront, or take a trip east to the Tsitsikamma National Park where you can explore the rugged coastline or take a walk on the suspension bridge at Storms River Mouth, or even try some adrenaline-pumping activities like ziplining or bungee jumping.

The N2 is notorious for the number of speed cameras so we highly recommend that you keep to the speed limit at all times. You don’t want any nasty surprises when you return the rental car or get back home.

The Garden route road extends from Storms River to Mossel bay, is a little over 200km along the coast. There is an inland option of 300km which takes you through some interesting towns so give yourself a full day if you like to explore a little. Plettenberg Bay sits right in the middle of the Garden route so there are plenty of opportunities to explore the whole of the Garden route over a few days.

R340 to Prince Alfred’s Pass

For a more adventurous drive, the R340 route from Plettenberg Bay to Prince Alfred’s Pass is a hidden gem that takes you deep into the mountains. The pass, designed by the famous road engineer Thomas Bain in the 1800s, is a winding gravel road that offers stunning views of the Outeniqua Mountains, dense forests, and dramatic landscapes. Along the way, you’ll pass through the quaint village of De Vlugt, where you can stop for a coffee or a bite at a rustic local eatery. This drive is perfect for those looking to explore Plett’s natural beauty off the beaten path.

Along the way you will come across local roadside stall or cafe’s that serve some of the local fare like Vetkoek, braai broodjies, preserves and of course biltong. If you have never been treated to a local braai broodjie, do yourself a favour and indulge, you will not regret it.
